Hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, would pay a fine rather than register for an ID card
A YouGov poll for the Daily Telegraph has found that 39% of those questioned oppose the Government's ID register and that 21% of those opposing it would resist signing up, even if it meant having to pay a fine. Extrapolated to the 60 million population of the UK, this could mean nearly 5 million people refusing to sign up.
The survey has more bad news for the Government, with 52% saying they were unhappy at having their details on the database. See The Daily Telegraph, 5/12/2006 for the full report. Out-Law has more analysis on the report

Un-crackable" biometric passwords cracked
The Guardian reports that the three million passports issued so far containing their holders' personal and biometric information on embedded chips are so insecure that all the data can be read with a laptop computer and an RFID reader as cheap as £174. Ipswich ID interrogation centre approved
Despite objections submitted by NO2ID, Ipswich Borough Council gave planning permission for an interrogation centre at Crown House. Supposedly only intended for people applying for their first passport, the government claims that no more than 16 people a day will use it. NO2ID believe that the true number will be at least 50-70 a day, possibly as many as 300.
See the planning documents and NO2ID in the local media for more about our protests.
