Welcome to the NO2ID campaign in the Ipswich area

We are a group of people from in and around Ipswich who have come together in order to campaign locally against the Government's plans to impose an unwanted, unnecessary and intrusive identity database system that will expose the personal details of the whole population to anybody who can gain access, whether legitimately or otherwise.

Everyone is welcome whatever their political persuasion, as long as they share our opposition to the ID database scheme.

What's wrong with the scheme?

  • ID card dummy

It will be highly intrusive and very expensive

During the Communist-era, the East German Ministry for State Security (Stasi) was notorious even in Eastern Europe for the vast amounts of information it collected about the country's citizens is suspected of being dis-loyal. Yet the British government's ID system entails collecting many times more pieces of information about every person in the country.

At a time when vital public services are being squeezed due to the recession, is this really the time to waste billions on a scheme like this?

  • ID card dummy

It will criminalise tens of thousands

The proposed ID database system will criminalise tens of thousands of ordinary people. The new Bill established a large number of new crimes and offences to ensure that people comply.

    Penalties already proposed include:

    * £1000 fine for failing to notify the authorities of change of details.

    * £2500 fine for refusing to register for an ID card.

    * Two years in prison for refusal to pay the fine.

  • ID card dummy

It won't provide any extra security

Listen to Government spokesmen and you'll be told that ID cards will be "completely unforgeable" and will "keep us safe from terrorism".

Not surprisingly, these claims are completely false. Even before the system has gone live, ID cards have already been cracked and altered. It took less than 20 minutes for a researcher armed with nothing more than a bog-standard laptop computer to change all of the details on an ID card. Not only did he change the owner's name and personal details, but he managed to add as a note "I'm a terrorist, please shoot me".

If ID cards were capable of "preventing terrorism" then it requires that nobody carrying one could possibly be a terrorist. Yet Oaklahoma Bomber Timothy McVeigh, required as a US citizen to carry a card, still managed to murder many of his fellow Americans. Similarly, the fact that ID cards are required in Spain did nothing to prevent the 2004 Madrid train bombings.

Even David Blunkett in a rare moment of honesty on the subject admitted, "ID cards won't stop terrorism".

Latest News

  • Despite what Brown says, it's still happening

Listening to recent pronouncements from Gordon Brown, you might think the ID database has been dropped. Sadly, as with most things emanating from the Brown mouth, this is a lie. The scheme is still going ahead, albeit in a much-changed format. Trials are happening in Manchester and propaganda has been aimed at the licensed trade pretending that ID cards will "solve" the problem of under-age drinking.

Don't believe the Prime Minister, this nightmare is still on track and we need to keep protesting against it.

    NO2ID Ipswich area campaign launched

The first meeting of the new NO2ID group for the Ipswich area was held at the Black Horse on September 16th, co-ordinated by Bobby Gooding. Plans for our local campaign are still being formulated but will include monthly get-togethers to discuss what we're doing and street stalls in October and November.
